Book Review: Chart Spark

Book Review: Chart Spark

This article provides a brief review of the book “Chart Spark” by Alli Torban

What is the book about?

To be honest, I purchased this book without knowing what it was about. Having been a long time listener of Alli’s podcast “Data Viz Today”, I assumed it would include information about creating effective data visualizations. Based on Alli’s typical delivery style, I knew that it would be insightful, easy to connect with and provide actionable tips to improve our data skills.

Upon reading it, I was delighted to see that she offers a unique take on the approach of teaching effective data visualization and communication skills. Rather than focusing on inspiration or tactical tips and tricks (which are also valuable), she focuses on teaching her readers how to explore and nurture their creativity to build impactful data driven communications.

So often, us data viz junkies can find ourselves flipping through data magazines or books and thinking “Wow these people are so creative, how do they even come up with these ideas?”. We have many examples of what excellent creativity with data looks like, but the path to getting there can feel intangible and far away.

In her Chart Spark book, Alli teaches us that Creativity is LEARNABLE and accessible to everyone. It’s something that can be sought out, built up and nurtured.

In classic Alli fashion, she not only makes the idea of creativity approachable, she shares easy creativity exercises with a data lens to help you work through your discovery journey. By the end of the book, the reader is not only comfortable with the idea that they can be creative too, they have the tools they need to create the initial spark, build creativity into their habits, tackle the creative editing process and unblock themselves!

Why should you read it?

As we end 2023 and are making our new year’s resolutions, some of you in the data field may be looking for ways to improve your impact in data communications. This book is an easy and quick read (~2.5 hrs) which safely guides the user through the often vulnerable journey of exploring their creativity.

I highly recommend checking out Alli’s Chart Spark book! Whether you're a beginner or an experienced practitioner, you will find valuable exercises in this book to help you work through your next project.
